The story
The inn’s name marks 1790, the year of Savannah’s first free election of a mayor and city council, not the year the building went up. Per the inn, the western part was built between 1821 and 1823 by Steel White as a duplex, and the smaller eastern section by the Powers family in 1888; the MPC Historic Building Map dates 130-132 Lincoln Street to 1821 and 305-307 President Street to 1888. The slate-floored ground level is thought to date from an earlier structure, possibly lost in the fire of 1820. A three-story guest house across the street on York, part of the inn, was built in 1875.
The ghost story
Guests staying in Room 204 report jewelry and clothing moved and bedcovers disturbed, attributed by inn lore to 'Anna', a young bride said to have fallen from a third-floor window in the early 1800s. Staff report a boy ghost, 'Thaddeus', who leaves pennies in the tavern.
