The story

The building dates from 1914 and is listed in the Town Plan district inventory as the Matanzas Apartments (1914–1917). The inn says it was known as the Matanzas Hotel during Prohibition, when rum smuggled from Cuba came ashore along the St. Augustine waterfront. Today it has 21 rooms and suites across the Main House, the Coach House and the Secret Garden, plus Nero’s Waterfront Café and the Tini Martini Bar.

The ghost story

Residents across the bay, boaters and passers-by report a light shining atop the inn on clear, moonless nights. The inn attributes it to a Prohibition-era widow who reportedly signaled rumrunners with a lantern from the roof.
