The story
Americus businessmen commissioned Atlanta architect Gottfried L. Norrman to design the Windsor as a resort for northern winter visitors, and it opened on June 16, 1892. Guests included boxer John L. Sullivan, labor leader Eugene V. Debs and William Jennings Bryan, and Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke at the hotel in 1928. It closed in the 1970s after more than 80 years in operation and was donated to the city in 1978. A community preservation effort reopened it on September 20, 1991, with further restorations in 2010 and 2019.
