The story

The corner of Main Street and 200 South held the Delmonico Hotel in the 1860s-70s and then Simon Bamberger’s 56-room White House Hotel, whose lower floors the National Bank of the Republic remodeled for its banking hall from 1895. After banker James E. Cosgriff merged his banks into the Continental National Bank and Trust Company, most of the old building was demolished and the 13-story Continental Bank Building went up in 1923-24, with Second Renaissance Revival detailing kept on the lower two floors. The Kimpton Group bought the neglected building in 1998, gutted it in a year and restored the carved stone faces, cartouches and cornice; the hotel has operated since 1999. The restaurant Bambara fills the former bank lobby, and the original vault door survives.
