The story
Judge Jeptha Vining Harris built the brick Queen Anne mansion at the ocean end of Duval Street for his wife Florida, the youngest daughter of William Curry; the 1983 National Register nomination singles it out as perhaps the best Queen Anne house in Key West. The Ramos family bought it in 1939, and the hotel says it ran as the Cafe Cayo Hueso nightclub for about a decade before Hilario Ramos renovated it as a private residence in 1949. It opened as a hotel in 1996, using the mansion and the adjacent Ramos Lopez House. The property was briefly renamed ‘The Mansion on the Sea’ in 2023 but again trades as The Southernmost House.
