The story
Built in 1886 as Public School No. 1 to designs by Robert S. Schuyler, who also designed St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the Fairbanks House. It began as a 4-room school, and a rear addition followed about 30 years later. By the 1930s the school had outgrown it; the building then served in turn as a library, offices and a Masonic lodge. The current owners bought it in August 2017 and spent 14 months on a gut renovation that restored the original stairs, windows, re-milled heart-pine floors and repointed brick, and added a pool and a putting-green courtyard. The inn now has 17 rooms and a bar called The Principal’s Office.
