The story
Built in 1926 by contractor G.A. Miller to plans by Francis J. Kennard & Son, the 18-story Floridan opened in January 1927 as Tampa’s tallest building, a title it held until 1966. Its Sapphire Room bar was a wartime gathering place, and the hotel’s own history says guests included Elvis Presley, Gary Cooper and Clarence Darrow and that the Cincinnati Reds used it as a spring-training base. The hotel declined after the 1960s and closed in 1989, and it was listed on the National Register in 1996. Hotelier Antonios Markopoulos restored it and reopened it as the Floridan Palace on July 30, 2012. It reopened as Hotel Flor Tampa Downtown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, in January 2024 after a renovation of about $25 million.
