The story

New York investors Joseph D’Esterre and Stanley Paschal assembled the site in 1924–25 and hired New York apartment architect Rosario Candela, who designed a Mediterranean-style apartment hotel around inner courtyards; it opened on New Year’s Day 1926. After the Depression it was sold at a 1932 foreclosure auction to the Mulford Realty Company, under which architects Treanor and Fatio made additions; a south courtyard followed in 1936 and a pool and patio in 1979. The hotel closed from 1984 to 1986 for interior renovation. A later renovation removed the kitchenettes and brought in Daniel Boulud’s Café Boulud.
