The story
The house began around 1845 as a two-story ‘cracker style’ pine farmhouse with a detached kitchen on the old trading route now called Cholokka Boulevard. Lumberman Zeddy Clarence Herlong and his wife Natalie Simonton moved in, and his lumber wealth paid to encase the original house in a brick mansion with four Corinthian columns (completed by 1910 per the inn; 1915 per the NRHP district nomination). The Herlongs raised six children there; after Zeddy remarried and left for South Carolina the house stood vacant until a couple bought it in the 1980s and opened a bed and breakfast. Owner Kim Shore runs it today with 11 rooms in the mansion and two cottages (the former carriage house and pump house).
