The story
William Traphagen opened a traveler’s tavern at Rhinebeck’s crossroads in 1704, and the Beekman Arms was added in 1766. The 4th Regiment of the Continental Army drilled on its lawn, and in 1804 gubernatorial candidate Morgan Lewis made it his headquarters while Aaron Burr campaigned from down the street. Franklin D. Roosevelt closed each of his campaigns for governor and president with a talk from its porch. Charles LaForge bought it in 1958, added the Delamater Inn, and built the Courtyard Complex of guest houses behind it.
The ghost story
Guests and staff report footsteps, cold breezes, strange smells and whispers, especially in Rooms 21 and 22, and employees tell of a black figure that emerges from the wine cellar; HHA put the inn on its 2025 Most Haunted list.
