The story
Albert Smiley bought 300 acres and the ten-room Stokes Tavern on Lake Mohonk in 1869, and the house opened with room for 40 guests in June 1870; he and his twin brother Alfred grew it into a ‘Victorian castle’ resort. The Smileys hosted the Lake Mohonk Conferences of Friends of the Indian and on International Arbitration, and guests included John Burroughs, Andrew Carnegie and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Hayes and Arthur. The NHL designation in 1986 covered the Mountain House, 83 other buildings and about 7,800 acres; the family’s land trust became the Mohonk Preserve. Six generations of Smileys have run it.
