The story

Brothers Stephen Carlton Clark and Edward Severin Clark, heirs of Singer Corporation co-founder Edward Clark, bought about 700 feet of Otsego Lake shoreline and built the hotel in 1909 to Percy Griffin’s Federal-style design. It ran seasonally from spring to fall, and in winter the family leased it to the Knox School for Girls. In 1927 the Clarks converted the neighboring Phinney house into the Cooper Inn, which is no longer open to the public. Stephen Clark founded the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, about an eight-minute walk away; the Clark family still owns the hotel.
