The story

The Fifty-Fifth Street Company built the Gotham Hotel in 1902-05 to Hiss & Weekes’s neo-Italian Renaissance design. The Landmarks Preservation Commission calls it one of the few Fifth Avenue buildings that recall the golden age of luxury hotels and among the oldest of the early ‘skyscraper’ hotels. It now operates as The Peninsula New York, which Michelin listed with one Key in 2026.
