The story
Clothier William R. H. Martin hired Henry J. Hardenbergh, architect of the Plaza and the Dakota, to design the chateau-style hotel, which opened in 1898 and grew through additions completed in 1910. In January 1916 golf professionals met here at Rodman Wanamaker’s invitation to discuss forming what became the PGA of America. The city later used it as a welfare hotel for homeless families until the last family moved out in 1989. It reopened in 1998 as the Holiday Inn Martinique on Broadway and is now in Hilton’s Curio Collection.
