The story
The Puritan Realty Company built the 12-story, H-shaped hotel in 1902 to Goldwin Starrett’s design. General manager Frank Case renamed it the Algonquin, let women stay unaccompanied, and made it a magnet for actors and writers. After World War I the writers and critics of the Algonquin Round Table lunched here, and Case opened the Blue Bar and Oak Room after Prohibition.
The ghost story
Staff and guests recount stories of apparitions in the lobby and dining room, which lore ties to the literary figures who gathered there; Historic Hotels of America put the hotel on its 2025 Most Haunted list.
