The story
John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed the Inn in 1936-37 as a resort hotel to carry the message of the restored colonial capital to a wider audience. The Boston firm of Perry, Shaw and Hepburn, the Restoration’s architects, departed from the strict colonial idiom of the Historic Area and drew on early 19th-century models. Rockefeller was closely involved in the design, insisting on careful study of every bedroom. Over the decades the Inn has hosted heads of state and international conferences.
