The story

William B. Tabler, chief architect for Hilton after it bought the Statler chain, designed the curving double-winged hotel, built in 1962-65 with precast concrete panels and for years the city’s largest pillarless hotel ballroom; D.C. HPO calls it an important example of Modern design in Washington. John Hinckley Jr. shot President Ronald Reagan at its T Street exit on March 30, 1981. It has long hosted the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner; on April 25, 2026 a man armed with guns and knives was arrested after running through the dinner’s security screening area, and the rescheduled dinner moved to the Waldorf Astoria.
