The story

The federal Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue was built from 1891 to 1899 to Willoughby J. Edbrooke’s design, with a clock tower rising 315 feet; it survived proposals in the 1960s to demolish it for the Federal Triangle plan and was renovated in 1978-81 with shops and offices. The Trump International Hotel opened in the building on September 12, 2016 and closed on May 11, 2022; it reopened as the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC on June 1, 2022. In June 2026 the General Services Administration sold the building to its leaseholder, BDT & MSD Partners, and Hilton said the hotel continued to operate as usual.
