The story
The club traces its origin to the Union League of America, a Civil War organization formed to support Abraham Lincoln and the Union; former members founded the Chicago club, whose original clubhouse opened in 1886 per HHA. Its current clubhouse was designed in 1926 by Mundie & Jensen, whose William Bryce Mundie was a member and modeled the Georgian Revival design on a nearby Astor Street residence. HHA lists U.S. presidents including Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover and George H. W. Bush among its visitors. The club says it holds the second-largest private art collection in the Midwest, after the Art Institute.
