The story
Built in 1906 as the Hotel Gassaway on land from the ‘Public Square Block’ set aside by city co-founder Henry Gassaway Davis, it was renamed the Hotel Tygart in 1923 and ran as a high-end hotel for more than sixty years. It hosted Forest Festival functions, the first Augusta Heritage Center classes and local Democratic Party offices, and Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. stopped there campaigning for John F. Kennedy in 1960. Converted to apartments in the 1970s, it was bought by nonprofit Woodlands Development Group in 2017 and reopened as a hotel after an $18 million-plus restoration.
