The story
MACRIS records 170 Charles Street as a 1908 Colonial Revival building designed by Page and Frothingham. It operated as the John Jeffries House, which Related Beal bought from Massachusetts Eye and Ear in 2016 and closed on November 20, 2017. Related Beal then renovated the building and built a 12,000-square-foot addition on the former parking lot at Charles and Cambridge Streets to create The Whitney.
