The story

The Main Inn is the three-story stucco Clinton Building, named for hotelier J. Clinton Fitch; its upper floors long offered rooms above shops that included a Ford Model-T showroom, and The Whaler’s Inn converted it to a hotel in 1969. The 1865 House was the residence of shipbuilder George W. Mallory, son of Charles Mallory, whose shipyard stood on the site of today’s Mystic Seaport Museum; Mallory sold the house in 1868. The Hoxie House stands on the site of the 1818 U.S. Hotel and the 1861 Hoxie Hotel; it burned in 1975 and was rebuilt in 2002. The inn’s restaurant, The Shipwright’s Daughter, won chef David Standridge the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast.
