The story
Joshua Trickey, said to be the first in Jackson to take in summer guests, built the Thorn Mountain House in 1869 as a wedding gift for his daughter Georgia and Gen. Marshall Clark Wentworth. Around 1880 Wentworth reorganized the hotel on a British-style ‘cottage system’, hiring New York architect William A. Bates to plan the complex. Wentworth Hall, completed in 1883, held the public rooms and thirty sleeping rooms, with detached guest cottages around it. The complex anchors the Jackson Falls historic district, listed in 2003.
