The story
Developer Harry Wardman built the Carlton Hotel to Mihran Mesrobian’s design, a limestone palazzo modeled on the Italian Renaissance, and it opened on October 1, 1926. Cordell Hull lived there during World War II. Sheraton bought it in 1953 and renamed it the Sheraton-Carlton; a 1987-88 renovation gutted and enlarged the guest rooms, cutting their number from 250 to 200, and Starwood renamed it the St. Regis in 1999.
