The story
John F. Brinkman opened the frame hotel in 1852, and after the Civil War it was renamed Sherman House for Gen. William T. Sherman and the 83rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Hillenbrand Industries bought it in 1923, added three buildings over the next decade, and in 1933 remodeled all four in Tudor Revival half-timbering while keeping much of the original poplar frame; the Old Vienna Café followed in 1953. The Sherman House closed in January 2015 after more than 160 years, was remodeled under new management and reopened as The Sherman by February 2017, adding a biergarten in 2019.
