The story

Building and brewing tycoons Adolph Zang, Philip Feldhauser and William Mygatt built the Oxford as a first-class hotel near Union Station, and Frank E. Edbrooke’s five-story design opened a year before his Brown Palace. A 1902 annex by Montana Fallis matched the original terracotta and pink sandstone trim and brought the hotel within half a block of the station. In the 1930s Charles Jaka remodeled it in Art Deco, adding the Cruise Room cocktail lounge to mark the repeal of Prohibition. Troops arriving at Union Station filled it during World War II, and after three years and $12 million of restoration it reopened on June 19, 1983.
