The story

The fifteen-story Meier & Frank Building was A. E. Doyle’s first major commission and the first Portland building in which he used glazed terra cotta. It was the flagship store and headquarters of the Meier & Frank department store chain, built in stages from 1909 with expansions in 1915 and 1932. Its upper floors were converted into The Nines, which opened in 2008; the name refers to the nine hotel floors and the building’s 1909 start.
