The story

Samuel Powers built a smaller inn on the site, ‘The Sign of the Buck’, which the hotel says served as a stagecoach stop and a brothel. Owner Robert L. Williams rebuilt it in 1850, when the railroad reached town, and renamed it The National Hotel, also known as the Upper Hotel. Its Postal Annex was once a blacksmith shop, hotel stable, garage, saloon and billiard hall. It remains a hotel, restaurant and Rathskeller bar.
