The story
Nathan Wood opened the brick Vermont Hotel as a public house in 1827 beside the Centre Turnpike, on the site of an earlier tavern. It became the Addison House in 1852, and Allen Calhoun added a three-story addition with baths and electric lights after buying it in 1897. Local businessmen reopened it as The Middlebury Inn in 1927. The 1825 Porter Mansion next door joined the inn in 1941 with nine rooms, and the Treadway Company added a 20-unit annex in 1968.
