The story
Brothers John D. and Cass A. Mayo, who had run a furniture store at Fifth and Main, built the 600-room hotel in 1925, patterning it after the Plaza in New York. Guests included John F. Kennedy, Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth and Charlie Chaplin, and J. Paul Getty lived there. The hotel was segregated: by one account its first Black guest came in 1951, when Harry Truman phoned to ask that Margaret Truman’s maid be allowed in, and she still had to use the service elevator. It closed in 1981 and stood vacant until John Snyder bought it in 2001 for $250,000; the hotel reopened in 2009.
