The story

The tower was built in 1969-1972 as the Chicago offices of IBM and was the last American building designed by Mies van der Rohe, completed with C.F. Murphy Associates. The city cites its prismatic massing, welded I-beam curtain wall and glass-enclosed lobby as archetypal Mies, and notes it was sited so as not to block views from neighboring Marina City. The building became a Chicago Landmark in 2008 and was listed on the National Register in 2010. Its lower floors were converted to The Langham hotel in 2010-2013.
