The story
Entrepreneur Larry Imig bought land on El Cajon Boulevard during World War II and opened the Imig Manor in 1946 with architect Frank L. Hope Jr.; Bob Hope owned one of its two penthouses. Conrad Hilton later bought it and renamed it The Lafayette, and it served as his headquarters for the San Diego Chargers. The pool was designed by Olympian and Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller, and the Mississippi Room ballroom appears in Top Gun. Business faded after Interstate 8 opened, and a 2023 renewal restored its common areas and rooms.
