The story

Around 1899 coffee and tea merchant Burleigh S. Thompson tore down the century-old Perkins house on Dock Square and built a fine modern mansion on the same foundation. After Thompson’s death the house passed to his daughter, wife of Captain Daniel Dudley, who sold it to Jacob Lloyd Hackenberg and his brother Murray; they opened it as an inn, added a lounge and dining room, and built an annex. By 1961 it had 10 guest rooms in the main building and 26 in the annex. It joined the Kennebunkport Resort Collection in 2009, and today rooms are in the Mansion and the River House.
