The story

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin Shepard built the house, choosing the design from a catalog by architect George Franklin Barber. The inn repeats a rumor that thirteen railroad cars brought the components from Knoxville. In the early 1900s Kate Shepard and her sister taught on the second floor, in what was known as the Misses Shepard School. The family owned the house until Kate M. Shepard died in 1974. The McRae Papers, Civil War documents found in the attic, now have a section of the Confederate Relic Room in Columbia, South Carolina.
