The story

The original frame residence was built in the late 18th century for Joseph Clark. In 1848 his son William, who had inherited the farm in 1839, added a brick wing and a unifying Tuscan portico with Jeffersonian Chinese-lattice railings. The house was later the homestead of the Shackelford family and was converted, with its outbuildings, into a country inn by the end of the 20th century. It is a few minutes from James Madison’s Montpelier.
