The story
Chester Houghton built the white Federal house at 145 Main Street around 1807-08, one of the oldest frame houses in Montpelier. In 1828 Dr. Edward Lamb, a revered early physician, built the brick Federal-style house next door, laid in Flemish bond, that is now the inn’s central building. Lawyer William Upham, later a U.S. Senator, bought the Houghton house in 1822. The two houses opened together as a 19-room hotel in 1988.
