The story

Montchanin grew up as a village for workers at the du Pont powder mills that Éleuthère Irénée du Pont founded on the Brandywine in 1802; its oldest building, the Pink House, dates to 1799. Known for a time as DuPont Station after the railroad arrived in 1869, the village was renamed Montchanin in 1889 for Anne Alexandrine de Montchanin, an ancestor of E. I. du Pont. Missy and Dan Lickle restored the cottages and outbuildings and opened the inn in 1996; the old blacksmith shop, with its forge intact, now houses Krazy Kat’s restaurant. In 2026 Allison Carpenter Vucich, an eighth-generation descendant of Anne Alexandrine de Montchanin, and her husband became the owners.
