The story

Noah Wheeler opened the building as a tavern, traditionally in 1789, on the coaching road through Hancock village. A two-story columned porch appears by 1867, and in 1875 owner J.F. Eaton replaced the gable roof with a mansard story and added an ell. Early-20th-century changes brought bathrooms and a monumental portico. The inn says it has hosted guests without a break since 1789 under twelve innkeepers, and it has reopened after remodeling as The Inn at Hancock with fifteen suites.
