The story
Lucy March’s family owned the original house at 40 Court Street; she and her husband John E. Sise tore it down and built their own mansion in 1881. Their daughter and her husband, Alfred Gooding, antiquarian minister of South Church, doubled its size. The house was expanded again in 1985 and opened as the Sise Inn. After a six-month renovation it reopened as The Hotel Portsmouth in 2014, and its interiors were refreshed in early 2024.
