The story
Businessman Charles Lufkin built the house in 1924 as a gift for his daughter-in-law; by inn lore he fermented ʻōkolehao in the basement, and today’s laundry chute was built so he could stir it from his rocking chair. It opened as The Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono bed-and-breakfast in 1996, with seven rooms in the main house and three in a modern addition. It was renovated and refurnished between April 2023 and February 2024 and reopened as The Historic Wailuku Inn, a 10-suite boutique hotel run by owner Ramu Tremblay. The inn sits a short walk from Wailuku’s historic town center and five minutes’ drive from ʻĪao Valley.
