The story
A group of local investors led by the Nashville Board of Trade began the hotel in 1908 and hired architect J. E. R. Carpenter, who finished the ten-story Beaux-Arts building in two years; it opened September 17, 1910 as the city’s first million-dollar hotel. In the summer of 1920 it served as headquarters for both the pro-suffrage forces of Carrie Chapman Catt and the anti-suffrage forces of Josephine Pearson while the Tennessee legislature voted on the 19th Amendment. Bandleader Francis Craig wrote the 1947 hit ‘Near You’ while leading the orchestra in the hotel’s Grill Room, and HHA says the Country Music Association was first officiated there. After a mid-century decline and closure, a restoration backed by Historic Nashville and Mayor Richard Fulton reopened it on March 6, 1981; the Interior Department designated it a National Historic Landmark in 2020.
