The story
Tudor Hall was built in 1918 to answer the World War I housing shortage, a modest apartment building with a handsome Tudor Revival facade and lobby by local architect Walter Granville Guss; senators and congressmen were among its tenants. It was converted to a hotel in 1982, when the courtyard became the skylit Tavern atrium. The facade carries 119 gargoyles, two said to depict the architect and his wife, and four large gargoyles over the atrium were salvaged from New York’s Commodore Hotel before its demolition.
