The story
Named for the Gadsden Purchase, the five-story hotel opened in 1907 and became a base for cattlemen, miners and businessmen on the border. After a fire it was rebuilt in 1929 by Henry Trost, with a white Italian marble staircase, marble columns and a 42-foot stained-glass mural by Ralph Baker. Thornton Wilder stayed two months in 1962, and Eleanor Roosevelt was a guest. It appeared on Hotel Impossible in 2013 and changed hands in late 2023, when new owners cut staff and began renovating.
The ghost story
The hotel is said to be haunted, especially Room 333, and it has appeared on TV ghost programs including a 1995 episode of Sightings.
