The story
The academy’s inn opened in 1932, funded by the widow and daughter of mining engineer and Phillips Exeter alumnus William Boyce Thompson, in Georgian architecture matching the campus. It was built to house visiting dignitaries, students’ families and visitors to the academy. It has hosted New Hampshire presidential primary candidates over the years. Hay Creek Hotels took over the lease in 2007 and carried out a $5 million renovation; in 2020 the inn briefly housed students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
