The story
Former Harvard president Charles William Eliot and his family built the hotel beside the Harvard Club as lodging for the university’s visiting lecturers; Eliot did not live to see it open. The Great Depression forced the family to sell, and Nathan Ullian and partners bought it shortly before World War II; the Ullian family still runs it. The Eliot Lounge nightclub, opened by World War II veterans Lawrence and Bernard Herman, operated in the hotel for five decades.
