The story
William A. Short built the house in 1904 with quarter-sawn oak paneling from the region’s sawmills, then a center of Helena’s timber trade. Nine mantels and the grand oak staircase were made by Chicago craftsmen; eight mantels remain in place and the ninth serves as the front desk. The house opened as The Edwardian Inn in 1984 and is now run by Robert Cheek.
