The story
Tobacco merchant Simon Hernsheim built the Italianate mansion, designed by Thomas Sully, on St. Charles Avenue in the 1880s. It became a boarding house during World War I, and in 1953 a local family turned it into a hotel whose porch bar became a neighborhood fixture. Jayson Seidman’s family bought it in 2019 and restored the building and added a new garden and patio.
