The story
Ruel W. Norton built the hotel in 1914 as Breakwater Court on the site of the Ocean Bluff Hotel, which had opened in the 1870s and burned in 1898; Clark and Russell were the architects and a 1916 addition followed. George Boughton bought it in the late 1940s and renamed it The Colony after his first hotel in Delray Beach, Florida. In 1954 the family added the neighboring Glen Haven Hotel as the East House. The Boughton family has run it for generations; today guest rooms are spread across five buildings.
