The story

The house was built in 1873 as Cliff Lawn, the summer cottage of John Winthrop Chanler, to designs by Newport architects George C. Mason & Son. Originally Stick Style with surrounding porches, it was remodeled around 1890-1900 with Colonial Revival trim and a mansard roof. It stands at the northern start of the Cliff Walk overlooking Easton’s Beach. Today it holds twenty individually themed rooms and villas; its lobby and shared rooms were recently redone by Studio Valerius.
