The story

John P. Walworth, a wealthy planter, merchant, banker and politician, built the house in 1834, and the nomination calls it the oldest documented Greek Revival residence in Natchez. It originally stood on about 100 acres. During the Civil War it fell inside Union Fort McPherson and served as the engineering department’s headquarters. The Walworth family lived there for more than 100 years, and the house was an early Natchez Pilgrimage show house. The sources read do not address the enslaved people on whom a planter’s household of this period depended.
